Year 13 Parents - Learning How to Learn

In early December, Year 13 received the latest version of CSG’s Learning How to Learn booklet. The booklet provides a variety of practical techniques and strategies for helping students become more effective learners, encouraging them to take ownership of their study habits and improve their academic outcomes. Becoming an effective learner is a skill that can last long after a student has left school.

We will run an online session on the above from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11th, 2025. Please look for an email with the meeting link in the coming days. The meeting will be recorded, and a link to the video and the booklet will be emailed to all Year 13 parents within the following week.

I look forward to meeting you then.

Debate Mate Trip to the Urban Debate League

This week, 18 students from our Debate Club went to St George's Catholic School to compete in the first round of the Urban Debate League, the largest debating competition in the country.

At Debate Club, over the last few months, our students from years 7 to 9 have been learning new oracy skills, practising the art of debating with mentors from Debate Mate.

Having worked hard in their sessions, learning the structure of debate and how to present (and break down) arguments, three teams from the debate club put their new skills to the test, competing in two proper debates at the competition this Thursday.

The first debate was a prepared motion sponsored by Comic Relief and was "This house believes that international aid is most effective when delivered through local communities". All the students on the trip worked very hard to prepare ahead of the competition and spoke with spectacular knowledge and confidence about both the pros and cons of international organisations versus local initiatives.

The second debate was an unprepared motion "This house believes social media should be banned for under-16s". Again, with only 15 minutes of preparation time, they all spoke eloquently about the pitfalls and benefits of social media for young people.

They did fantastically, with every team winning at least one of their debates! Well done to all the students involved!

The next round will be on the week commencing March the 3rd and I hope the students are looking forward to further improving their skills and competing again.
