Last Friday some Year 7s were given some trowels, a bucket of compost and old newspaper.
We made paper pots to plant seeds that will hopefully grow into healthy herb plants in the summer.
We are lucky enough to be part of the beginning of a project called ‘Know your Onions’, a programme to help young people learn what vegetables look like, how to plant them and (most importantly) how to cook them.
We planted about ten difference varieties of herbs and when they become seedlings we will plant them in the raised beds in the kitchen garden area in the school grounds. We will also be planting other seeds, such as potatoes, tomatoes and salad leaves.
We were joined by Cath, a gardener and volunteer from the charity Food in Schools who instructed us on the growing, caring for and preparation of seedlings. It was fun and educational and we look forward to the rest of the project in the summertime.
