    IWD - Girls Leadership Conference

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This event was first marked in 1911 when over one million people came together to celebrate and have been happening annually since.

To celebrate International Women’s Day this year, we were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to attend the Association of State Girls’ Schools  (ASGS) leadership conference hosted by Ernst & Young in Canary Wharf. The main focus of the conference was based around ‘A World of Possibilities’ and there was an emphasis on finding your passion, and how women overcome challenge and develop resilience.

We had a day filled with presentations, workshops and inspiring guest speakers, including speeches from Dame Helena Morrissey (Head of Personal Investing, Legal & General Investment Management), Jules Chappell (former Ambassador to Guatemala), Dr Jess Wade (Physicist, Imperial College London), Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu (New York Attorney and Solicitor of England & Wales, Co-Chair Africa Committee, American Bar Association, Founder & Editor-in-chief of the Women in Leadership publication) and Dr Marina Della Giusta (Associate Professor of Economics, University of Reading). These speeches were very inspiring as they highlighted issues that many women face in their work-lives, no matter which sector you’re in, such as having children, gender pay gaps and lacking confidence at work as a result of your gender.

We participated in workshops about ‘Women in Economics’ and the journeys that women working at EY took to get to where they are today. Overall, the day was very empowering and reminded us that we can accomplish anything, and the fact that we are women should never hold us back.
