    Careers - Spring Term

    Year 9 Careers

This Spring Term the year 9’s all had a one to one careers meeting to give them advice and help about their options and their career paths. Many knew what paths they would like to take, whereas some were still unsure and were reassured that that is absolutely fine. From the year 9 feedback the students strongly agreed that the careers interviews were valuable and they were given clear advice about what they needed to do to pursue career paths they were interested in. Here are some things they said that they found helpful about the career meetings:

    • In my opinion, the aspects of the meeting that was most useful was the explanations about what pathways I can go through with my GCSEs.
    • My teacher was very clear and she helped me decide between two subjects I was having trouble choosing between.
    • We had an in depth discussion of the choices I wanted to make in relation to my career path.
    • My advisor recommended some very helpful out of school activities which would help in my career of choice.
    • It was useful in finding out what A-levels you need to go to a certain University and on which subjects.

This term year groups 9, 10 and 11 have all been introduced to our new online portal called Unifrog. They have been using the site to research colleges, sixth forms, careers paths, input information about their extra curricular activities and trips and writing their personal statements. The year 10’s have also had two careers ambassadors from BAM construction in their PSHE lesson who helped guide them through personal statements and CV writing. Year 8’s will be introduced to using Unifrog in the next two weeks as well as starting a topic in PSHE in which they will be working on a Dragons Den activity building on skills such as planning, teamwork, presenting and being their own entrepreneur.

    Speakers and Visitors

This term we will have two speakers coming in at lunch time on international Women's day, Friday the 8 of March. This is a unique opportunity for students to hear first hand from female business leaders on their journey to success. The aim is for students to leave feeling invigorated and inspired, with the knowledge and tools to show them that entrepreneurship is a viable and achievable aspiration. The first founding speaker is from ‘The New Entrepreneurs Foundation’ who are a company that builds an active community of young entrepreneurs with the skills, knowledge and vision to start, build and lead businesses. The second founding speaker is from Toucan Ventures which supports the growth of early-stage food, fashion and lifestyle start-ups across the UK.

    Trip to Wembley

At the end of the year, we will be going on our annual trip to Wembley where 40 Year 9 students will be invited to attend the annual careers fair and then pop concert to celebrate the hard work and dedication they have shown this year.

We look forward to having more speakers in the Summer term. If any parents would like to come in and give a talk about their job please do contact myself and we can organise a time for you to inspire our students about your career.
